Iron-Gate Square
The Hearthhold Watch
The eastern gate. The Watch booth. The four holding cells. Captain Vellow's quarters above. The kingdom's law as it actually lives in Hearthhold: local, practical, sometimes inconvenient, rarely catastrophic.
Captain Vellow
Captain of the Watch
Strict but not cruel. Will look you in the eye. Considers a fine a fair exchange and a jail night a kindness compared to what the Realms' justice would do. Will not be bribed personally — but acknowledges his patrolmen are.
Veteran of the Iron Kingdoms' northern marches. Took the Hearthhold appointment after a wound he does not talk about. Has been captain for nine years.
The Day-book
Your name is not in the day-book. The Watch knows of you only as a traveler. Keep it that way, or do not. Either makes the chronicle.
The Patrol Roster
| Name | District | Shift | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serjeant Mira Bren | Iron-Gate | day | Mira is Captain Vellow's right hand. Will not take a bribe under any circumstance. |
| Serjeant Holm Edrick | Iron-Gate | night | Older. Tired. Honest. |
| Watchman Eira Vell | Market Cross | day | Mara Vell's niece. Recently appointed. Idealistic. |
| Watchman Cori Wynn | Market Cross | night | Accepts coin to look elsewhere. A small coin, not a large one. |
| Watchman Brask Tor | Tavern Row | day | Drinks at the same taverns he patrols. The innkeepers pay him a stipend. |
| Watchman Renna Hale | Tavern Row | night | Will accept coin or potion (her preference is potion). |
| Watchman Doss Vell | Three-Balls House | day | On Master Lombard's quiet payroll. The Watch knows. The Watch does not act. |
| Watchman Nila Roth | Three-Balls House | night | Looks the other way for a flat fee per offense. Known prices. |
| Watchman Garn Bell | Docks | day | Has an old arrangement with two smuggling captains. Will not extend it to newcomers. |
| Watchman Lys Brennan | Docks | night | Newest dock watchman. Still has principles. Will probably lose some. |
| Watchwoman Aeris Vell | Cemetery | day | Cemetery duty is volunteer. Aeris takes it because her brother is buried there. |
| Watchman Tomas Reld | Cemetery | night | Twin Flames lay priest. Will not be bribed. Will discuss faith if you ask. |
The Watch is underpaid, local, practical, imperfect. Some patrolmen will accept a coin. Captain Vellow will not. The Captain knows which patrolmen will, and has decided not to fix that. The town is held together by what is acknowledged but not solved. — P
