Iron-Gate Square

The Hearthhold Watch

The eastern gate. The Watch booth. The four holding cells. Captain Vellow's quarters above. The kingdom's law as it actually lives in Hearthhold: local, practical, sometimes inconvenient, rarely catastrophic.

Captain Vellow

Captain of the Watch

Strict but not cruel. Will look you in the eye. Considers a fine a fair exchange and a jail night a kindness compared to what the Realms' justice would do. Will not be bribed personally — but acknowledges his patrolmen are.

Veteran of the Iron Kingdoms' northern marches. Took the Hearthhold appointment after a wound he does not talk about. Has been captain for nine years.

The Day-book

Your name is not in the day-book. The Watch knows of you only as a traveler. Keep it that way, or do not. Either makes the chronicle.

Watchman Garn BellDocksdayHas an old arrangement with two smuggling captains. Will not extend it to newcomers.

Watchman Tomas ReldCemeterynightTwin Flames lay priest. Will not be bribed. Will discuss faith if you ask.

The Watch is underpaid, local, practical, imperfect. Some patrolmen will accept a coin. Captain Vellow will not. The Captain knows which patrolmen will, and has decided not to fix that. The town is held together by what is acknowledged but not solved. — P
