The Market Cross

an hour the watch changes for the day-shift second time.

A weathered stone cross at the centre of the market. Carved with the four faces of the year. The criers proclaim from its base. Oaths are sworn here when the chapter-house is closed. Two strangers met at this stone forty years ago and built a town around it; the cross is older than them.

Today's proclamation

By order of the chapter-house: the spring tax-stipend is due before St. Wenna's Day. Householders who cannot pay are to present themselves at the Hall.

Witness an oath

Two strangers want to shake hands on a deal. They ask you to stand by. It costs nothing. It is recorded.
